Ceremony to Honor Vietnam Vets

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Saturday's ceremony aboard the USS Orleck to honor local Vietnam vets kicks off more than two weeks of programming by First Coast News to commemorate 50 years since the end of America's war in Vietnam. Beginning Monday, nightly segments will pay tribute to individual vet stories and will culminate with the hour-long documentary "Voices of Bravery" on April 13 at 7 p.m. I was honored to participate in this worthy project and thank anchors Jeannie Blaylock, Lew Turner, and the entire FCN crew for putting together this moving tribute! Please tune in to the broadcasts or online to witness these extraordinary stories.

My son Luke and I prior to the start of the ceremony. Later that afternoon, the boardwalk would crowd with hundreds of Vietnam veterans, families, and guests. A particularly special moment came when the entire crowd offered the vets a full-throated, thunderous "Welcome Home!"... a simple courtesy most had been denied in the 50 years since the end of that divisive war. Many in the crowd were visibly moved. I'm glad my son was there to witness this moment and to understand the sacrifices of those who had gone before.
